Copyright Registration in United States

Register your work in the US Copyright Office through our specialized attorneys.

Registration of copyright

With copyrights, the equity rights of economic content are acquired, which permits the owner or his authorized licensees to benefit from the exploitation, reproduction, communication, application and diffusion.

To show intellectual property it is appropriate to use the letter c enclosed in a circle, ©, which is the symbol of the owners of intellectual property copyrights that is established in the Universal Copyright Convention, approved in Geneva.

Time Periods and Period of Validity

The copyright registration process usually takes around 6 months.

The time period of validity for a particular work depends on several factors (whether it has been published, date of first publication, etc.). As a general rule:

  • For works created after January 1, 1978: life of the author plus an additional 70 years
  • For an anonymous work, a pseudonymous work, or a work made for hire: 95 years from the year of its first publication, or 120 years from the year of its creation, whichever expires first
  • For works first published prior to 1978: varies depending on several factors

Renewal: works created on or after January 1, 1978, are not subject to renewal registration. As to works published or registered prior to January 1, 1978, renewal registration is optional after 28 years but does provide certain legal advantages.
